But for our feline friends, the holiday can be stressful and strange.

As we cat lovers know, kitties are sensitive creatures. The loud noises, unfamiliar guests, and sudden changes in environment can stress them out. Here are some simple but important 4th of July safety tips from the Sacramento Cat Hospital to help keep your cat calm and safe on Independence Day.

1. Keep Your Cat Inside

Even if your cat is used to spending time outside, do not let them explore outdoors on the 4th of July. Loud fireworks can send even the most confident cats running to who knows where in an effort to escape the chaos. And when they’re scared, cats can easily get lost.

Make sure all doors, windows, and pet flaps are shut on the 4th of July. Keep your cat indoors well before the evening festivities begin.

To ensure their safety, keep your cat indoors before the holiday. Some people begin lighting fireworks early, regardless of local regulations.

2. Make a Quiet Spot Indoors

Set up a quiet room where your cat can get away from the noise. Include their favorite blanket or bed, some toys, fresh water, and a cozy hiding spot, like a crate or even just a cardboard box.

Keep the lights on and play soft music or white noise to help tune out the sounds of excitement outside. If you’re avoiding the fireworks, use the quiet time to hang out with your feline friend.

3. Avoid Lighting Fireworks Off at Home

If you’re thinking about lighting fireworks in your own yard, consider skipping it for your pet’s sake.

Fireworks can be loud, scary, and dangerous if your kitty darts into harm’s way or chews on something like a glow stick or sparkler. Of course, even if you’re not lighting fireworks, your neighbors might be.

That’s why we recommend keeping cats inside during this boisterous holiday!

Make sure your cat’s ID tags and microchip info are up-to-date just in case she does manage to run for the hills on the 4th of July.

Need help getting your kitty ready for the holiday with a microchip or anxiety medication for fireworks?
